Delta’s AC Servo Drive & Motor ASDA-A2/B2 Series Sells over 7 Million Sets Worldwide

The High-end Servo System ASDA-A3 Series continues to receive praise and helps manufacturers accomplish advanced precision finishing

The manufacturing industry is booming in Taiwan as it moves towards higher precision and higher value. Besides conventional industries, the electronics, semiconductor, and machine tool industries are experiencing outstanding success and playing pivotal roles globally. Precision manufacturing such as servo systems are known as the mother of the precision industry and are applied in multiple applications. Delta has devoted its capabilities to the industry since entering the servo system market in 2003. In 2009, Delta launched the advanced-type AC Servo Drive & Motor ASDA-A2 Series for general applications. The ASDA-A2 Series not only satisfied customers in terms of features and capabilities compared to the imported products but it came with fast and comprehensive local technical service. Leveraging its advantages as a local brand, Delta grew with its customers and helped them enhance equipment competitiveness and reduce their dependency on foreign brands to drive Taiwan’s local precision components development. The ASDA-A2 Series received praise in the Taiwan market and set a sales record in the first decade after its launch of 3 million sets worldwide.

Delta’s path developing servo systems was challenging. In the early stages, Delta’s team neither recruited foreign consultants nor relied on foreign technical support. All the products were developed with just local technologies. The debut of the ASDA-A2 Series made the market see Delta as a serious player and built a foundation for product portfolio expansion of servo motors and self-developed 20-bit encoders. This was when the electronics assembly industry grew rapidly. Later with great effort, the ASDA-A2 Series stepped out of the Asian market and finally became a global hot-seller in its field. It was not an accident that the ASDA-A2 Series succeeded. With the right specifications, market choices, prices, and timings, the ASDA-A2 Series helped Delta set up the market for its subsequent models.

Since its debut in 2009, Delta’s ASDA-A2 Series and its extended models, the standard general-purpose AC Servo Drive & Motor ASDA-B2 Series, have sold more than 7 million sets. Its innovative features, such as built-in motion control requirements have become a reference for first and second movers. However, even an excellent product cannot lead forever. While CPUs and frequency components made considerable progress in the past decade, as well as the industrial standards of high-precision and high-speed have increased, most of the new servo systems in the market have upgraded specifications, such as tripling response speed and 64 times positioning resolution compared to the indexes in 2009. Along the way, the ASDA-A2 Series has completed its mission with honors and is ready to pass the responsibility to the next generation.

Moving forward with the industry, Delta later presented the advanced AC Servo Drive and Motor ASDA-A3 Series, upgrading size, features, and capabilities from past generations, including servo drive width and motor length size, which have both been streamlined by 20%. The ASDA-A3 Series has also added the advanced auto-tuning and system analysis function to lower the machine tuning and applications threshold. Moreover, the ASDA-A3 Series significantly increases frequency response and encoder resolution for stable and smooth motion paths to achieve precise positioning and finishing, such as precision engraving, IC packaging, and semiconductor manufacturing.

Looking back, the success of the ASDA-A2 Series has enabled Delta to gain a firm foothold in precision manufacturing. However, with the digitization and AI trends, every player in the industry is bracing for increased competition considering physical-virtual integration. Meeting the rising demands of smart manufacturing, Delta will stand on the success of the ASDA-A2 Series and invest in more research and development resources to create another legendary chapter for Delta’s servo systems.
