India’s progress towards lowering the greenhouses emission and carbon footprints

India is taking several steps to improve the quality of air with less carbon footprints and greenhouses emissions. As per the report, the country has implemented many energy efficiency programs that have resulted in electricity saving of worth 11.3.16 billion units in 2018-19, which was 9.39 of the net electricity consumption. This has helped India in reducing 151.74 million tons of CO2 emissions, which was earlier 108 MTCO2.

Governments across the world, including India, shifting their focus towards integrating renewable energy sources into the grid system and creating energy efficiency practices in various sectors.

India is working towards its ambitious target of 450 GW renewable energy by 2030 by taking multiple steps. The government announced providing 17 lakh solar pumps to farmers under Pradhan Mantri-Kusum Yojana in the coming days to capitalize on this clean resource. The country is currently working to achieve its target of 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022, which will include 100 GW of solar power and 60 GW of wind energy.

A report also mentioned that the United Nations Industrial Development Organization collaborated with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to execute global environmental facility-funded national projects that will promote energy-efficient and renewable energy in India’s particular MSME segment.

Thus for government, the vision of tomorrow is more towards penetration of clean energy and less carbon footprints.

Understanding the trends and challenges witnessed by India in lowering the greenhouses emission and carbon footprints

As India progresses towards reducing the carbon footprint, innovative technologies and energy efficient solutions can play a vital role in leading towards a greener tomorrow.

IIoT can play a significant role in reducing carbon footprints. With IIoT solutions, businesses and industries can minimize the use of natural resources, which includes raw material fossil fuel and water. It also helps in reducing production waste and plays a vital role in keeping track of material flow.

While India leads towards it’s clean energy goals, a recent report stated that renewables should be the backbone of national efforts to restart economies’ impacted by Covid-19 outbreak. The cost of installing renewable for sourcing power will continue to decline by 2021. The trend is majorly due to the innovation in technologies and the increasing scale of projects. In the last decade photovoltaic has witnessed a decline of 82% in cost and onshore wind 39% as per the reports.

Electric vehicles produce less carbon dioxide as compared to petrol cars across the globe, even if electricity generated includes a substantial amount of fossil fuel, according to a study that projects that in 2050 every second car on the road could be electric. An average lifetime emission from electric vehicles is around 70% less than fuel-driven cars. But to have a smooth electric vehicle ecosystem, it is also essential to build a robust EV charging infrastructure that can encourage more users to explore electric vehicles as their first options. The government is playing its role in strengthening the EV charging infrastructure like the proposed plan to have an EV charging station every 3 kms in the next three years.

Energy Storage system solutions can play an essential role in leading the world toward clean energy. A recent study stated that in the absence of energy storage devices, one-third of renewable energy could be lost or not stored. Adding energy storage helps conserve this lost energy and reduce a significant amount of carbon dioxide.

The government of India is paying special attention to smart LEDs. As a part of India’s strategy to fight climate change, one crore LED streetlights have been commissioned across the nation to avoid 1,119.40 megawatts (MW) of peak electricity demand. State-owned Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) is impending the world’s largest streetlight replacement program across 2.7 km of roads that will help in an annual energy saving of 6.71 billion kWh and reducing the carbon dioxide emission by 4.63 million tons.

But perusing the dream of clean energy has few hurdles which the country needs to address to wake in the dawn of the greener tomorrow.

According to research, around 68% of the greenhouse gases come from the production of energy, which remains largely dependent on coal plants. The government is taking essential measures to promote renewable energy that can help to reduce dependence on coal. Still, some believe that since it is the central source of the nation’s power, it would take time to displace it, especially as the cost of integrating renewable energy into a grid is still high.

Another challenge is the rising number of fuel-guzzling cars, which can drain the resources of the future. While architecting a better environment, it is also essential to pay special attention towards the buildings. The buildings and their construction together globally account for 36% of energy use and emits 39% of carbon dioxide annually. A recent report highlighted that although by 2050 all buildings need to be net-zero carbon to meet the goals of the Paris agreement, currently, it is not even 1%.
