Energy Efficiency Solutions for Smart Cities becoming essential globally & understanding its progress in India

Today 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, but it is expected that by 2050 almost 70% of the world be part of metropolitan cities. This has raised the concern about how much pressure will be on city infrastructure with concern to overpopulated & traffic congestion to even security concerns with rising demand for utilities.

Cities consume 75% of the world’s natural resources, including 80% of the global energy supply, and produce approximately 75% of the worldwide carbon emissions, according to reports.

This has made optimizing energy consumption a fundamental objective of a smart city. As per the reports, it is believed that renewable energy can strengthen the power requirements for both commercial & residential buildings. The trend towards energy-efficient building market is increasing worldwide with increased government support & investment, rising energy prices, and reductions in emission levels of greenhouse gases.

In smart cities, both residential and commercial buildings are more efficient and use less energy. The consumption of energy is analyzed, data are collected, and power production is optimized through different sources and distributed energy production.

Another key factor that makes Smart Cities more lucrative is the IoT is the network of interconnected objects or devices embedded with sensors and mobile devices that are able to generate data and communicate and share that data with one another. IoT related technologies, including low-cost sensors and high-speed networking technologies, will accelerate faster adoption of smart city solutions over the next few years. It is estimated that almost 10 billion connected devices will be in use in smart cities around the globe soon.

The United Nations report estimates that India will have added 416 million urban dwellers by 2050. The growing urbanization and migration to cities have generated the need for the up-gradation of infrastructure while reducing carbon emissions with the use of energy-efficient resources. Further, rising global warming has also accelerated the need for sustainable living. Energy efficiency, sustainable resources, advancement in digital technology have led to the rise of the smart cities concept.

Current trends and challenges

The emerging trends and developments that will dominate the Smart City initiative in the coming year.

  • Faster connectivity
5G technology is the latest trend in the network and communications advancements. The deployment of 5G comes with major advantages like higher bandwidth, delivery and performance guarantees, adaptability, energy efficiency, and real‐time capabilities. With the help of this technology, the time required for the operations and processes will be reduced to almost half since the speed of connectivity will increase considerably. This will also enable to function technologies like IoT and Information and Communications Technology (ICT), which are instrumental in the development of these smart cities.
  • Smart Grid
Smart grids are used for energy consumption monitoring and management. These grids conserve energy in places that might not need power and then send it to areas that may need even more power. In fact, a building can become entirely self-sufficient in its energy requirements by using technology like solar windows. The unused energy generated can be offered to vehicles in the local area.
  • Energy Efficient buildings
Greenhouse gases have been proven to be incredibly harmful to the environment, and the need of the hour is to limit the amount of greenhouse gases they put into the atmosphere. Energy-efficient buildings are high-performing buildings as they use different building methods, materials, and other resources that help in being environmentally friendly structure
However, despite the huge investments and initiatives by the government, the urban planners and system integrators of smart cities face many challenges owing to lack of integrated solutions that could help them meet the demands of smart cities ranging from energy management, water management and waste management to pollution, traffic, telecom, and healthcare.
