Taiwan-headquartered and founded in 1971, Delta Electronics (Delta) devotes its unique expertise in high energy efficiency to foster sustainability to telecom power systems to miniaturized automotive power components among others. Delta in India is operating since 2003 having 16 regional offices, 3 manufacturing facilities and two R&D centres. Benjamin Lin, President, Delta Electronics India talks about the India plans, opportunities and significance among others.

Where does India stand for Delta Electronics as part of its overall strategy?
India stands for as a pillar of Delta’s strategic long-term growth plans, as this is ascertained by the huge investments that Delta is putting in India. Back in 2014, we announced investments up to $500 million to develop our manufacturing capabilities in Krishnagiri, which shall be catering to exports and domestic businesses. Delta is bullish on the Indian market and on its human capital resources for skilled R&D and manufacturing. Also, within Delta now, India has been made a Region to sharpen our focus as well as our dedicated efforts and resources. As India gradually becomes of the world’s major economic and manufacturing engines, Delta’s highly diversified portfolio of energy-saving products and solutions, which from 2010 to 2021 helped our worldwide customers save over 35.9 billion kWh of electricity and reduce over 19 million tons of CO2 emissions, are capable of helping the country fulfill its industrial and environmental goals.

Tell us about your EV Charging Solutions business?
We have cumulatively delivered over 6,000 electric vehicle (EV) chargers to customers in India, a substantial milestone to foster the country’s e-mobility transition. The close cooperation between Delta and major stakeholders in the EV charging infrastructure sector, which includes major charge point operators, such as Tata Power, Bangalore Electricity Supply (BESCOM), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Energy Efficiency Services (EESL), as well as various OEMs, has made this breakthrough possible. To name a few successful cases, Delta has supplied more than 1,000 chargers under agreement with Tata Power Company so far; has installed over 60 EV chargers for several sites operated by EESL (CESL) and has supplied 114 EV chargers to BESCOM (Bangalore Power Utility Organization). Moreover, a single site features 11 fast chargers for one of the largest bus OEMs in India, while also supplying a portfolio of EV chargers to a Kerala State utility company deployed across the state. For the Indian market, Delta India currently offers a complete range of EV chargers for 4-wheelers and e-Bus applications. Delta is enhancing its R&D and manufacturing capabilities in India, with more than 50 per cent content of its product offering in the country, now manufactured locally.

To make e-transportation ‘Green’ in real terms, Delta has already installed a couple of Green Charging Stations as ‘Proof of Concept,’ which is an integrated solution with Solar, Electrical Grid, local Battery Energy Storage, Energy Management System, and EV Charger. The dependence on grid power can be reduced and theoretically could be brought down close to zero. This solution can be customized based on different customer requirements on-site basis.

What about your other business verticals including data centers, telecom and automation?
In Telecom, we are the pioneer in providing power solutions to the majority of telecom infrastructure in India, supported by our world-leading position. Our solutions are completely 5G ready, and we are more than prepared to support 5G growth in India. 5G will intensify the infrastructure requirements across network layers. The 5G network topology will demand more and more small cells/in-building solutions to deliver services with a last-mile connectivity approach. Delta is geared up with a power-efficient portfolio, large capacities to meet roll-out targets and one of the largest service networks with 800 engineers across India to provide after-sales support.

Industrial Automation: We at Delta have been a major player in machine automation and have further expanded into factory automation, process automation, robotics solutions, vision solutions, camera solutions, and even other gantry solutions using our motion products. We also cater to end-user segments like water, wastewater, pharma, plastic, cement, steel, infrastructure, and the building of smart cities.

The growth prospects of industrial automation are huge, with demand from all sectors of the industry. As I mentioned, the growth in exports is also a major factor that contributes to this. Learning lessons from the pandemic, Business owners are doubling down on replacing labour with automated processes wherever possible. We expect the growth in double digits to continue.

Datacenter: We are one of the major players in the Data centre market, and our business in India has grown leaps and bounds in the last few years. We added many prestigious customers to our clientele and are very esteemed to have delivered many successful projects across India. We are constantly striving to have sustainable and even higher efficient solutions for datacenter. With everyone’s focus on the data centre industry, the biggest edge that Delta has is that is a strongly R&D-driven organisation with over 8 percent of its global sales revenue allocated to research and product innovation.

How Delta India is strengthening its R&D to support technological innovation?
To address our global demand, especially in software and electronics, it is more important to have efficient, competent engineering resources, along with being only frugal. India has long invested in developing an ecosystem and education background to produce good engineering strength. Hence, today the country is a more attractive place for anyone who wishes to invest in this segment.

How do you align yourselves with India’s policies which include Atmanirbhar Bharat, Digital India among others?
We are very much aligned with Atmanirbhar Bharat. We are putting a lot of focus on increasing the localisation in India. In the next 1-2 years, we shall make India an export hub for Delta worldwide. Also, our businesses like Data Centre and Telecom power solutions are the main fundamental stones for the Digital India campaign. We are striving to have more efficient and environment-friendly solutions to strengthen Digital India Campaign.
